Sirens

Artificial light at night is a deadly siren to nocturnal migrating birds, which themselves are a large group. It is estimated that over 80% of migratory species in North America are nocturnal migrants, making them particularly vulnerable to light pollution, which dazzles, confuses, traps, and disorientates them.

Unable to see the stars to navigate, birds may become trapped between beams of light, circulating in confusion until they succumb from exhaustion.

I’m really excited to show you all this new #wildlifeartivism piece - it’s been brewing in my brain for a while, and I’m really happy with how it’s turned out. I wanted to expand from my traditional stripped back colour scheme, adding a few more hues in there - and I also wanted it to be angular, sharp, and stylistic - emphasising the unnaturalness of light pollution & its affect on our birds.

21:02. A text. ‘omw’

The evening walk to the house
(I did not notice him. I am moth)

I walk to his house every evening.
Every evening. Eyes on the shadows
Suspicious. (did it move, or is it paranoia?)

I walk to his house. Evenings
are mine. I am my own – if I
squint, I can see trials left by others
(pheromone visualisation – I am caught like a flame)

I walk to his house
In evenings, the roads twist, turn, curl
Rubble kicked up – fumes
(are the trees absorbing all of this?
do we need more trees? how do I plant more trees?)

I walk to evenings, my house (his)
My house is growing
I am growing – there is –
Grief. A twisted thing – a knife in the heart
(did the tree absorb enough - - -
am I going mad?)

I walk the evenings, his house
Rises – and alongside the polluted pathways
Spring pale flowered tendrils –
Rapunzel’s ropes (let down
let down your hair!
he prefers it long – do I care?)

I walk to his house. Evening
comes suddenly and i
jolt awake, covered in sweat
(i thought i was a moth, i thought
i could fly. I cannot.)

Evening house! I walk. He
is alarmed. He is a moth now
His brown wings flutter.
I am hungry. I am bird. Hunt.

The house walks, but I am evening.
My perfumed lips are pastel lemon,
And in the moonlight

I kiss moths, flirt with stars
There is no house

To celebrate, here are a few of my favourite photos from across the years!!

Although a lot of what I do (especially on here) is art & wildlife artivism, I work across multiple media, including film, photography, animation, and writing - all of which are art forms themselves.

Taking a multidisciplinary approach is not only fun & refreshing, it also helps engage with a diverse audience - something I feel strongly about trying to achieve.

My photography focuses more on invertebrates and birds - I love unusual angles, playing with movement, experimenting with concealment & partial visibility, and exploring light effects.

I’ve had a little secret recently…

I was so excited (and nervous!) to be a *wildcard artist* on the new series of Sky’s Landscape @artistoftheyear !! ✨

As primarily working as a wildlife artist, I was quite a rogue contestant, but I had so much fun, and loved every minute* of it 🪿

It was so wonderful meeting & chatting to other artists, as well as to the very lovely @realstephenmangan !!

The @storyvaultfilms crew were so lovely, from start to finish, and I’m so excited for you to see the series when it comes out in 2026!!

For the next 2 weeks, you can view the 32-piece collection, featuring quotes collected from anonymous individuals about their experiences - both good & bad - with birding and bird ringing.

Red Ivory

Helmeted Hornbills are critically endangered - with the thing that gave them their very namesake causing their population to plummet in recent years.

The hornbill has a “casque” the helmet like structure on top of their beak - and these are illegally traded for aesthetic purposes: to carve.

Dubbed “red ivory”, the casque is made of keratin (the same thing our fingers and hair are made from), but this doesn’t stop the trade & subsequent poaching of helmeted hornbills.

In fact, the casques of the helmeted hornbill are more expensive than ivory by weight.

This piece depicts the carvings associated with illegally traded casques, but each of the carvings is a stage of the helmeted hornbill’s life history: from nesting to death.

Introducing @sam_lightfoot_loftus’s breathtakingly beautiful “For evermore, Forever Moor”!! The accompanying EP to “I, me, moor”. ✨

When I was coming up with “I, me, moor”, and wanting it to explore Mimi’s synaesthesia, as well as natural sounds, creating an accompanying musical quartet felt key.

Sam is an exceptionally talented musician & lyricist, also hailing from North Yorkshire, so he was the perfect person to bring Mimi’s story to life through music. 🌱

Split seasonally, like the sections of the book, “For evermore, Forever Moor” explores the trials & tribulations of growing up and growing alongside something as wild as the moors.

Comic-Con got me all sorts of inspired, which is especially nice as I’ve been in such a spiral of artistic burnout, anxiety, & generally feeling cloudy with regards to my art. Something I found even more - quite frankly - scary, as it’s my livelihood, (cue existential crisis).

But today, I was back at home, and I realised there were colours in my brain again. Ideas brimming!

Highlights from an exhausting but wonderful day 3 included:

🦐 Doing some fast turn around commissions, which were really loved by people!!! Thank you!!
🦐 Selling out (!!) of A6 whales & all of my business cards!!
🦐 Having some truly wonderful conversations; we got recommended a Star Trek featuring a whale, previewed an awesome VR piece of tech, and many other things!

“Growing up in & around the @yorkshiredales national park & the moors, I almost took it for granted … I wanted to create something that felt like a big moorland hug”

I, me, moor tells the story of Mimi, a young girl growing up in the Yorkshire Dales with synaesthesia - a neurodivergent trait which allows her to experience sounds with colour. When she hears the sounds of the moorlands, they are lit with purples, yellows, and twists of orange.

Mimi’s life is entwined with that of the moor - she has a connection which is tried & tested when she moves away…

I’ve been doing macro photography for over 15 years now - I’ve always loved how accessible it is; invertebrates are everywhere, and it is always so exciting finding some with my camera lens & playing around with showing an entry point & immersion into their world.

I’m so so SO nervous but also VERY excited to introduce “I, me, moor”!!!

An illustrated ecological fairytale about the Yorkshire Dales National Parks, telling the story of a girl called Mimi, who has synaesthesia and a unique connection to the moorlands she grows up in. ✨🌱🐦‍⬛

A GIANT thank you to the amazing @campaign4parks for awarding me one of their 2024/5 New Perspectives Storytellers Grants, made possible by @heritagefunduk ‬ 🩵

The book launches on the 19th of May (preorder link in bio!!!!), it will also be available digitally! ✨

The book launch is accompanied by a musical EP called ‘For evermore, Forever moor’, by the amazing @sam_lightfoot_loftus of @eofishermen‬, with @chuck_loris & @alicewolffwhitehouse. This will also be launching on the 19th of May!! 🎶

@blue_apogee joined me to play bear risk - or ‘Katmai: The Bears of Brooks River’ - we definitely discovered who’s more competitive (hint: it’s me), and had a lot of giggles trying to get our heads round the game!

So if you’re having a thundery Sunday evening (like I am!) then hopefully you can have a laugh at us messing around with some beautiful bear cards, based on Alaska’s #fatbearweek 🐻
