𝗜 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 (𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸)

Maybe it’s just me, but the birds do not seem to be singing as loudly - or as numerously - as they have in previous years.

I’ve always been pretty attuned to nature, particularly birds, and so the drop seems obvious to me.
Instead of hearing swifts screaming all day long, I hear - wind. Cars. Blackbirds.

And that’s it.

This piece features a nightingale, its song a burst of colour, and empty gaps of other birds that are missing in the black & white forest, devoid of the soundscape that once made it technicolour.

Skylark Symphony

We have lost 63% of our UK skylark population since 1967.

Once found singing on farms across the UK, singing skylarks are now a rarity.

Growing up, I’d often hear skylarks near my home in the @yorkshiredales - an area where, on the moors at least, you can still hear skylarks singing as they spiral up into the sky.

Working on a 1950s map of the Yorkshire Dales (specifically around Harrogate), I wanted to reflect the loss of this bird by painting it on the reverse - blank - side of the map in flight, as it moves between suitable locations.

As far as the cuckoo flies

Long term @btobirds studies have shown the cuckoos have declined by over 65% since the 1980s, resulting in them now being a red-listed species in the UK.

Although the exact reasons for this decline aren’t fully known, it is likely to be a mix of:

🥚 climate-induced changes in the breeding times of the host species (cuckoos are parasitic so they need to time their egg laying with the host species they’ve adapted to nest parasitise - brood parasitism)

🥚 increased mortality on their migration routes across West Africa (which may be caused by a lack of prey availability from climate change, as well as additional factors. Cuckoos migrate between their African wintering & European breeding sites every year)

This #wildlifeartivism piece focuses on the cuckoos returning to the @yorkshiredales - as they do each summer.

The rolling dales are created using an 1950s map of Harrogate & the dales - which felt fitting.

I wanted to depict the cuckoo itself with an egg from one of its host species, as cuckoos will remove one of the OG parent’s eggs in exchange for one of their own 🐣

new #wildlifeartivism piece, but this one I played around with a lil film idea to help me bring it to life too.

Skylarks are a red-listed species in the UK, having declined 53% between 1970-2004. Primarily driven by land use change & habitat loss.

This piece shows skylarks flying on the reverse side of a map of @yorkshiredales (specifically this is an old map of Harrogate & the surrounding dales!) I wanted to play around with the idea of the species being connected to a place, but also being missing from it - hence working on the reverse side.

The reveal aspect of the map unfurling was also an idea I wanted to explore. I feel it helps me capture the magic I feel whenever I find (and hear) skylarks ✨

now there are gaps across the country where curlew should be - places where their haunting song is just that, a haunting.

A study by scientists at the University of Sussex last year found that harmful chemicals (types of pesticides) used in pet flea treatments were found in every single nest surveyed as part of their study.

The impact of pesticides & insecticides from flea treatment is well-documented on our waterways, but much less well known for its deadly effect on nest survivability.

My latest #wildlifeartivism looks at how pesticides such as fipronil (represented with the watercolours here) in pet fur, find their way into nests when birds such as great tits (the eggs shown here) take shedded pet fur and integrate it into their nests.

The higher the prescence of insecticide in the nest, the greater the number of unhatched eggs or dead chicks found in the nest.

I wanted to reflect this through my piece, showing the chemicals seeping into the unhatched eggs - unnatural shades, none of which would be found on the eggs normally.

Fipronil, which was found in 100% of the surveyed nests, is banned in both the UK & EU for agricultural use, but is still legal when used in flea treatment for pets.

Although it’s vital we keep our pets safe, this shouldn’t be at the cost of the environment.

Renew is the brainchild of @emmadesaram & @ellies._world ✨ - a residency for young neurodivergent environmentalists who are working in the nature & climate spheres, and it’s supported by the lovely folk at @sosuk_charity 🫶🏻

It’s so valuable to spend time with those who have similar brains to you, experiencing something you all love together- whilst sharing knowledge & advice about different barriers, issues, and struggles we’ve all faced.

The plan is for Renew to become an annual 2-part residency, which is honestly SO exciting to hear ✨

Anyway - a few lil snaps from the last few days, including a mega cow 🐄, some very cold water swimming 🏊‍♀️, and a panoramic photo featuring the gang (swipe to view!)

From my part - I did more writing than drawing over the past few days; mainly short-form poetry. So idk, if you wanna see it lemme know !!

I designed @stornowayband’s @royalalberthall merch!!!!!! ✨ for a journey from summit 🗻 to sea 🌊

It’s been a completely surreal year working with the fab Stornoway gang, @olikizuki, Brian, John, as well as the folks at @wastedyouthpr on the official poster for their STUNNING Royal Albert Hall gig last night (!!!) as well as the MERCH!!!

Honestly - Stornoway were exceptional. An immersive, theatrical set, that felt like it went far-beyond a standard concert. 🐋 and you should 100% preorder their upcoming album…

And seeing people queuing (!) for merch I designed, was utterly surreal. A true pinch-me moment !!

As was having a lovely girl come up to me and say how much she loved my art 🫶🏻 I don’t know what she was called, but if you see this - thank you for making my week brighter with your kind compliment (and sorry if I looked so surprised!) ✨🫶🏻

I designed @stornowayband’s @royalalberthall merch!!!!!! ✨ for a journey from summit 🗻 to sea 🌊

It’s been a completely surreal year working with the fab Stornoway gang, @olikizuki, Brian, John, as well as the folks at @wastedyouthpr on the official poster for their STUNNING Royal Albert Hall gig last night (!!!) as well as the MERCH!!!

The moors & Yorkshire have being having a hot minute lately, with Wuthering Heights & A Woman of Substance, so here are a few *sneaky peeks* at I, me, moor: a strange little ecological fairytale, set on the North York Moors, inspired by @yorkshiredales

I, me, moor is a fairytale told through 3 interweaving voices: Mother, Moor, and Mimi.

It follows Mimi as she grows up, and learns about the intrinsic role she plays in keeping the moors safe. It blends poetry with magic realism & nature - and I *loved* creating it.

It also features illustrations (by yours truly) and a stunning quartet EP “Forevermore, Forever Moor” by @sam_lightfoot_loftus & @chuck_loris of @eofishermen 🤍

I have copies available (£5) which are on my shop, or DM me!

As an artist & a biologist, it’s safe to say I’m pretty obsessed with @teamcherryunofficial Hollow Knight & Silksong ✨

It’s a gorgeous game all about bugs and exploration! (I literally love it, and will happily chat about it for eons) 🪲🪰🐜🕷️🪳🐞🐌🪱🐝🦋🐛🦟

So, I figured - why not recreate the (huge) map with key elements from each area?!

This is an A3 size artwork - created digitally with @procreate - I’ve spent over 60 hours on it so far, but this is the first 24, distilled into just 90 seconds!

This is 100% turning out into a MUCH bigger project than I was anticipating 😅, but I figured - maybe other people might like it too? 🥹

Also - Shamrock update ☘️ : currently no growth, but it’s only been 7 days, and shamrock normally takes at least 2 weeks to germinate :))

I’ve never been very good at doing anything on here about my degrees - I always get quite shy about it, but I’m trying to push myself to talk about things like this more!! So it was incredibly special to go back to @lmhoxford and reunite with some utterly wonderful people ✨ especially the Biological sciences gang 🌱 (missing a couple tho!)

@oxford_uni has an old tradition of turning BAs into MAs after about 7 years after you matriculated (the year you started your degree) - so some photos of me from my OG graduation as well as a couple from the most recent one 👩🏻‍🎓

𝐿𝒾𝓂𝒶𝓍 𝓂𝒶𝓍𝒾𝓂𝓊𝓈 - the Leopard Slug

Big, Slimey, Spotty, … Cute?

Slugs have such a terrible reputation because of their monchin & cronchin habits, but leopard slugs are actually incredibly cool, and even might help your garden!

They mostly eat decaying plant matter (rather than fresh leaves) & they’re also carnivorous, and will eat other slugs !!

Plus, they’ve got pretty spicy $ex lives - suspended from an aerial mucus trapeze string!

Swipe for the outtake of me dealing with the repercussions of putting a lot of cut grass in my mouth 👄

Seeds supposedly only last about 3-5 years in a packet, but under the right conditions, seeds can last for hundreds, or even thousands or years! Hence why seed banks are such an important part of biodiversity conservation, especially in the light of the climate crisis.

Honestly, I’m excited to see if these lil ladz grow! If you’d like to see a part 2 (if they grow lol) plz lemme know 🫶🏻

I was lucky enough to run a series of workshops on Pole to Pole as an example of a creative conservation campaign ✨, as well as chatting on a panel about AI in conservation, and doing some mentoring 👩🏻‍🎓
