Sketchbooking is something I only started doing regularly last year. Moving around with work means that having a sketchbook on me lets me doodle & daydream based off my surroundings. I feel like it gives me the space to experiment, and play around with new styles.

Unanswered duet

I have been drawn to & inspired by the devastatingly sad story of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō since I first came across the species in @lemoncholy_’s beautiful animation “bird song” (please go and watch it, you won’t regret it).

Found on the islands of Hawaii, the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō became extinct around 1987 (when its hauntingly beautiful song was last heard).

One of the biggest reasons the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō became extinct was due to the introduction of predators & mosquito-borne diseases.

This #wildlifeartivism piece depicts the sonogram of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō, its instantly recognisable sharp notes, sung as part of a courtship duet between partners.

As the piece progresses from left to right, the song becomes distorted by the sonogram of humming mosquitoes. Within the chaos, a lone Kauaʻi ʻōʻō sits, its own song, in smaller form, spilling out - unanswered.

The story of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō has always broken my heart (the animation by Michelle makes me cry) - not only does it mark the extinction of a species, but the extinction of an entire avian family: Mohoidae.

There are quite a lot of levels and layers to this #artivism piece, which is also a lot more abstract than some of my others. I hope that - if nothing else - it makes you think.

Yesterday was the first time I’ve taken “A Girl & Birds” somewhere in an in-person, public-facing capacity. 32 artworks, many depicting anonymised quotes from people (not just women) who are speaking out about both the good & bad within birding.

The exhibition accompanies my piece written about my own complex relationship with ornithology - you can read it on @btobirds’s website, via the link in my bio.

It was both terrifying & heartening to see so many people engaging and interacting with the exhibition & with my writing (in the book!) at Hampshire Ornithological Society’s Annual Conference at @stswithunsgirls

It was also really promising to speak to so many people about safety & change with birding, bird ringing, & the environmental sector - including the fabulous @chrisgpackham2 & @casualbirderpodcast

A massive thank you to The Eric Hoskings Trust, who made both the exhibition & book possible; and to the @btobirds for supporting me with “A Girl & Birds”, and continue to push the conversation & drive change.

Also a BIG thank you to the wonderful @estherumsey18, @jogoodfellow13, @freddlescg, & BTO Youth for helping me with the exhibition & logistics; it genuinely wouldn’t have been possible without you. 🩵

It’s finally feeling like spring! 🌀 so here’s some progress on my big hare that I started last year!

This piece is very on and off, I circle back round to it every month or so, and the idea is it’ll be one of the main illustrations for my book about hares, which I’m writing for @penswordbooks @whiteowlbooks_ 🐇

Working on the wonderful @stornowayband’s poster for their 2026 @royalalberthall gig (March 30th!) was a proper “pinch me” moment

I am *SO* excited (and honestly cannot believe it) that I’m going to have an artist stand at London @mcmcomiccon this May (23-25th)!!!

The last 24 hours have been quite surreal to say the least - I applied because @zoec33 encouraged me to when we went to Comic-Con last year. We met lots of incredibly talented artists, one of whom is the amazing @jemmajamieskidmore, and she was also really encouraging of me ❤️ - so a big thank you to both of them, as well as the ever-supporting @blue_apogee 🌀

I’ve never done an art market before, so the run-up to May is already requiring a lot of prep & planning; and I thought I’d be fun to try and share some of that journey here!

I really cannot express how excited I am (and also very nervous & full of imposter-syndrome) - I can’t wait to bring wildlife art, silly doodles, and wildlife artivism to @excellondon

For the past 6 months, I’ve been working on a new project, nicknamed INDIGO, as part of @campaign4parks’s New Perspectives Storyteller’s Grant, funded by @heritagefunduk

Introducing… I, me, moor

A short story infused with folklore, myth, and magic - it follows Mimi, a girl with synaesthesia, as she grows up in the North York Moors National Parks.

Mimi’s moors are colourful, overflowing with a vibrant soundscape - but what will happen to the moors when she leaves?

I, me, moor is illustrated with ink drawings, and will be accompanied by four songs written & performed by the fantastically talented @sam_lightfoot_loftus

I’m so excited for it to be coming out into the world!!! The book should be (hopefully!!) finished by April/May, so give me a shout if you’d like a couple and I can ensure you get one when they release! 🌀

The Spill

There are an average of 2.2 large oils spills ever year, with more than 700 metric tonnes of oil leaked in 2024 alone.

Oil in our oceans is massively damaging to all marine life, from phytoplankton to birds & even our gentle giants, whales.

A study reported by @oceanographic_mag concluded that a 2010 oil spill disaster directly correlates with steep declines in cetacean (whale and dolphin) populations within the area.

This new #wildlifeartivism piece, The Spill, looks at a beached whale in an oily ocean, whilst some of the slick turns into the shapes of oil rigs & platforms that are drilling for more.

In light of new political movements, more protected areas are at risk from oil drilling, and this also increases the risk of future oil spills.

Spring into 2025 🌀💛

I’m super hyped to be one of the artists contributing to @dswfwildlife’s new “Art of Survival” collection initiative!

Every season, there’s a new theme for artists within the collection to create to, and the first was “Spring into 2025”, which led me to create “The Boxers” 🐇✨

This is a PSA that barn owls do not hoot!!!!

The latest @bridgetjones film is ✨fab✨, but I really couldn’t let the hooting barn owl slide… they are elegant, silent hunters (their feathers have specially adapted for silent flight!) (apologies for anyone who heard me angrily remark, they do not hoot! in the cinema…)

Tawny owls do hoot, but it’s actually the male & female together that makes that quintessential “twit twoo” sound we associate with all owls!

It’s estimated that over 150 million women worldwide take the pill as a method of contraception, yet a less well-known environmental side-effect of hormonal pills includes biasing the s3x ratios of fish & marine animals.

Some species of fish - including salmon and trout - have been shown to have more oestrogen receptors, making them more susceptible to increased levels of oestrogen in our waters (which occurs as a result of the pill). This can cause gender bias, as well as change their behaviour, making it harder for them to reproduce - and potentially even leading to substantial decline in species.

I really debated on creating a #wildlifeartivism about this issue - the idea came to me suddenly, but it’s much more complicated than some of the previous issues I’ve illustrated, and I’m very aware of that.

Contraceptive health is so, so important - women’s health is still significantly less researched and underfunded compared to men’s. We still rely on pills which are known to have side effects - both to us, and to our natural world. There must be a better solution 🩵
