Lost?

There’s a lot of turbulence today, and I’m so angry, frustrated, and sad with it all.

@_wilderskies_ recently asked me what I do when in the face of anxiety and feeling small; and the answer is - create.

I write, I draw, I sketch, I imagine and dream and MAKE. We can’t lose hope now, little ripples will make waves - and we can fight still.

Right now I’m mostly feeling intense déjà-vu - feeling the same I felt 8 years ago, but much more strongly.

This piece is part of a new series of artworks looking at things in places they’re not meant to be. This one is a whale, specifically a northern bottlenose whale, in the Thames.

Introducing… From Scribbles to Sketches ✨

For the next 4 weeks, I’m going to run weekly (mostly Wednesdays!) wildlife art workshops online - the aim is to get people comfortable with making some squiggles, scribbles, shapes, and sketches - and along the way you’ll create some really cool wildlife art too! 🥰

Home?

Parakeets are one of several species that have come to call the UK home in recent years, but are originally non-native species from elsewhere. These species often bring vibrancy and diversity to our cities, urban spaces, and rural landscapes - yet they also remain controversial additions.

With my latest #wildlifeartivism piece, I want to make you think about how you perceive non-native species, such as the parakeet.

The parakeet appears lonely and lost in the midst of a colourless city - it offers a splash of brightness; or perhaps it doesn’t blend in as it should.

Working on this piece has been so, so much fun. It’s a different style, but something that feels natural based on my sketches I do when I’m out and about - and it definitely felt like the right style for this subject matter!

Reedling

Early September, my Dad & I went to one of our local nature reserves. He’s a wildlife photographer too, so we often go together with the aim of seeing what we’ll stumble across while exploring a mosaic of habitats - and this lil trip was no different.

I think I last saw bearded tits in 2015. It’s the only other time I’ve seen them, and I lost all the photos I got as a teenager when our hard drive corrupted; so going back almost 10 (!!) years later & having one of the most magical encounters with these stunning little birds yet, was very special indeed.

There were about 30-40 birds in the flock, and they were pinging all over the place, but I really wanted to get some more artistic shots of them, hiding in the reeds.

I absolutely love how this one turned out - the softness of the male bearded tit as he perches, temporarily paused before he pings off amongst the reeds again; and the textures of the reeds - their sharp shadows emphasised in black and white.

Reedling

Progress is progress

This lil gorilla mum & her baby are proving a lot of fun to work on - it’s another experiment, where I’m working in a mix of media & playing around with colours and shapes with the hopes of showing the closeness between these two gorillas!

Gorillas are such caring parents, so this is something I really want to get across - from an emotional perspective - in this piece.

Hidden / Between the gaps

One of my local areas at home is full of overgrown hedges and tiny, hidden paths through brambles. It always feels magical whenever I explore it - and when I was there in early autumn, this flock of juvenile Reed buntings were darting and peeping amongst the leaves.

I spent ages following them, quietly waiting within the hedge for them to flutter into the gaps in between.

This is one of my favourite photos from the evening - the soft light and framing making the bunting feel free & hopeful.

From the Flames 🔥

I know I’m in a bit of a quetzal phase at the moment - so it felt natural to explore that with another #wildlifeartivism piece.

Resplendent Quetzals are listed by the IUCN as Near Threatened; primarily because of habitat loss from deforestation, forest fragmentation and agricultural expansion.

To explore this, I wanted to show fire - slash & burn being a commonly used deforestation method. One interpretation of this piece shows the quetzal going up in flames as it loses its habitat.

However, I love to create pieces with multiple interpretations; quetzals are also found in cloud forests which are some of our most well-protected habitats (thanks to the fantastic Costa Rican conservation initiatives!). Its resemblance to a Phoenix, rising, is hopeful. We have not lost this threatened species yet.

Flight Paths

Every year, in North America alone, up to 1 *billion* migrating birds die each year due to building collisions caused by artificial light at night (or ALAN for short).

And recent studies suggest that this estimate could be conservative.

ALAN is particularly detrimental for migrating birds who rely on the solar compass to navigate. Birds are attracted to ALAN sources & may become entrapped in these areas, circling endlessly due to disorientation before dying from fatigue or energy depletion; as well as colliding into buildings; or flying drastically off course due to reduced navigation capacity.

With this #wildlifeartivism piece, I wanted to explore the paths birds fly during their migrations - but peppering the sky with the paths of light instead. If you trace the Robin’s white flight path, you’ll see how confused & disorientated this beautiful songbird is.

Light pollution is caused by all sorts of sources - from outdoor lights (floodlights, street lamps, adverts, security lights etc) to the lights we leave on in our homes.

When it comes to also keeping our streets safe for us - there’s a fine line - illumination makes many of us feel safer when walking home at night.

But there also needs to perhaps be a compromise - a way for our lights to impact migrating birds, and other species, significantly less.

Into the Red ❣️

As several of you know - Arctic Terns are my favourite bird - and last month they were placed on the UK Red List, as a result of severe population declines.

It was an absolute pleasure to sell two original pieces of the Malaysian Sun Bear as part of @animalnaturefuturefilmfestival’s Charity Auction last night, with 50% of profits going to @bsbcc to support the sun bears in their care.

I’ve been trying hard to think about how to summarise @gybn_cbd’s International Youth Conference on Biodiversity, and it’s *hard*.

Because it was more than a conference. It was very much the start of something; and something which was completely eye-opening (and deeply inspiring).

I feel very lucky to have been one of the young delegates able to go; and it was an entire *privilege* to share my art & my work with others from all over the world.

Art & creativity are so natural to us all - and I believe so, so strongly that they are an integral part of us tackling some of the big issues facing our world - both ecological, and sociopolitical.

So more soon (of course) but in the meantime - some #bts photos taken by an awesome assortment of friends. 🩵

Birds. They’re feathered and floating; weightless in the air. They have an effortless way of lighting up my day whenever I see them; but my relationship with them hasn’t always been easy.

“A Girl & Birds” combines words and art, highlighting some of the issues I’ve faced as a young woman working in ornithology - but also showcasing the hope and joy I get from the natural world.

You see - birds saved my life, but 5 years ago, they almost destroyed it.

And I’m not alone - so many other people have experienced issues including sexism, bullying, manipulation, and abuse within the ornithological sector - so I hope that when you read this piece (link in my bio to @btobirds, where you can read it) & view these artworks, it makes you think differently about how you can help make the natural world accessible for all.

And for anyone who’s going through this, or who is experiencing PTSD, please reach out to those who can help you (there are some links in my bio, but @mindcharity has some fantastic resources); I promise you, it gets better.

The Moors are my home - my happy place, and my safe place.

Recently, I spent time photographing newly fledged swallows as they feasted on the emergence of flies, which in turn were feeding on the freshly blooming heather. 🩷

Swallows are incredible aerial acrobats - and the added challenge with photographing them recently was manually focusing (as my lil Tamron lens is about 15 years old now!).

But with motion blur in the background, and really trying to capture the swallows against the incredible colours of the Heather, I’m pretty happy with the results!

Curlews!

But so many people have never heard of a Curlew, never mind heard one sing.

I’m thrilled to have been awarded @wader.quest’s 2023 anniversary grant to produce a short film about curlews, delving into the threats they face, and the people conserving them – with a huge focus on song.

I am SO excited to be awarded one of @campaign4parks’s 2024 New Perspectives Storytellers Grants! ✨

My project is going to combine art (of course 🙃), writing, and music (with help from the lovely @sam_lightfoot_loftus, @eofishermen, & @ukbeetlemania) in an anthology with a twist! 💫

The anthology is going to be exploring the North York Moors National Park & the wildlife found there, through the eyes of a young girl growing up with synaesthesia (which is where you visualise sounds and music with colours, patterns, smells etc - and for me, it’s very impactful as an artist), and how this influences her interactions with the natural world & its soundscape. ⛰️

I hope you’re excited for this new lil project as I am! And in the meantime, The Lost Songstress comes out THIS Sunday; and A Girl & Birds comes out in less than 2 weeks! So watch this space!!
